Let’s face it. Kids are growing up in a society that is digitally connected. This makes it harder to monitor what they do and who they communicate with. This opens them up to dangers that parents never experienced before. This also makes it that much harder for parents to protect their kids, particularly when it comes to the online solicitation of a minor.
What is online solicitation of a minor? It is when someone under the age of 18 is invited by an adult to meet up with the intent of engaging the minor in a sexual act. This is a federal and state crime that mettles a minimum ten year sentence, once the offender is found guilty.
It is not illegal for adults to talk to minors online. However, talking to them in a sexual manner and asking them to do anything sexual, whether in person or online, is a punishable act. As a parent, you don’t want your child to experience this. Even when you can prosecute them for online solicitation of a minor, you don’t want it to get to such a stage.
Protect your child from predators online
One thing you should do to avoid having to file cases like aggravated sexual assault of a child is to prevent this from happening in the first place. Prevention is the key to protecting your child. Here are some things you can do:
- Inform your kids of such dangers online – You should teach your child to be wary of people who will befriend them for improper reasons. If they notice a person is starting to talk to them in an inappropriate manner, they should tell you about it. You should also teach them to exercise caution when giving out personal information. Addresses and phone numbers should only be given to people they can trust.
- Don’t place computers in your child’s room – This allows predators to talk with your child freely without your knowledge. Place the computer they use in an area where you can see what they are doing and who they are talking to. You should also monitor their use of other devices that can connect to the internet, like smartphones and tablets.
- Develop an open line of communication with your child – Being able to talk to your kid about anything helps prevent these things from happening. One of the reasons why some kids are susceptible to this type of situation is when they cannot talk openly with their parents. They turn to others that they feel will listen to them and understand them. This is sometimes how an improper student/teacher relationship begins and how predators determine who to victimize.
These are a few of the things you can do to avoid predators from victimizing your child. No child is too young to learn to be careful about these things. Children as young as 6 years old and even lower can become victims of such crimes. This is why a crime called super-aggravated sexual assault of a child has emerged of late.
